A Crossroads of Quichélense Culture
Thursday is market day in the trading town of Chichicastenango, known for its traditional K’iche’ Maya culture. The large market is held at the crossroads between canyons and isolated department of Quiché and Lake Atitlán. It is said that some of the most beautiful traditional Mayan textiles can be found here.
In Addition to textiles at the Chichicastenango market you will find food, flowers, pottery, wooden boxes, condiments, medicinal plants, candles, pom and copal (traditional incense), cal (lime stones for preparing tortillas), grindstones, pigs and chickens, machetes, and other tools. The market is also home to small eateries (comodores).
