One of the world’s most active volcanoes: Volcán de Fuego (the fire Volcano) forms a stunning backdrop behind Antigua Guatemala. The 3763m (12,346′) stratovolcano is continuously active with eruptions every 15-30 minutes. Larger eruptions rattle windows drop ash on the town below.
Local residents hardly give notice to the fire volcano and it has more or less become a part of everyday life in Guatemala. With the exception of a few notable major eruptions.

2018 Eruption of Volcán de Fuego
On 3 June 2018, the volcano produced its most powerful eruption since 1974. Large pyroclastic ash clouds unexpectedly hit El Rodeo, Las Lajas, San Miguel Los Lotes, and La Reunión villages in Escuintla, The ash buried the towns and killed many of the residents. Antigua was only slightly effected.
