What a ride! We started with a short shuttle up 7000′ from Antigua with amazing views of all the local volcanos. Once on the bikes I immediately got a flavor for what they meant by hike a bike and bushwhacking! This was REAL Guatemala! A short section of fun dirt road ups and downs turned into a narrow trail along a gorgeous ridge with spectacular views of all the peaks with wildflowers and lush forest all around us.
Definitely an interesting terrain challenge, even for this pretty experienced rider, with super steep climbs on varied terrain. But the carrot was the descent down this amazing ridge, a toboggan ride of winding techie dirt trail for miles. As we re-entered populated areas by way of corn fields and other farms the trail stayed rowdy and fun. I really enjoyed the contrast of starting in the middle of silent nature and slowly progressing back into the grime of the city on trails and backroads. I really felt like I saw a huge range of life just in a few hours in a way I’d never see through any other type of tour.
My guide Brendan knew the area like it was an extension of his body, and supported my skill development with some really helpful tips along the way. I’d definitely recommend a tour with MTB Guatemala to anyone — from beginners to pro-level riders there’s definitely something for everyone here and you’d never find most of it without a guide. Thanks guys! I’ll be back!
